Forming a Municipal Utility: The City of Winter Park, Florida Experience

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 – 6:30pm – 9:00pm
Location:
First Presbyterian Church (Between Canyon and Walnut on 15th Street) Boulder, CO
Who:
Randy Knight
Speaker:
Mr. Knight was the lead staff member in the efforts by the City of Winter Park, Florida to municipalize beginning in 2000.  Despite opposition from the local utility (Progress Energy Florida), the municipalization effort passed with 69% of the vote in September 2003. After issuing RFPs for power supply and management of the distribution system, the City of Winter Park began supplying community-owned power on June 1, 2005. Since becoming a municipal utility, significant strides have been made in reliability improvements including placing over 7 miles of mainline feeders underground and completing 5 neighborhood undergrounding projects.

Laura Ruby http://yummyyards.org/  has volunteered to  lead a garden walk on Sunday, August 29, 2010  for  Newlands/Greenlands neighbors.  The Greenlands Steering Committee is currently seeking interesting garden features along Hawthorne and 4th Street  for a Newlands/Greenlands garden tour.  We aren’t necessarly looking for the picture perfect Sunset magazine garden.  We are interested in all kinds of gardens, such as energy/water saving gardening, composting, unique plants and garden decor, and of course beautiful flowers and veggies!  If you would like to share your garden for the walk, please contact Kay at kayabingham@gmail.com.  The walk will end  with a locovore potluck.  Please RSVP for more information.

Even though we didn’t round up any bike riders for our June neighborhood bike ride, we organizers enjoyed our cruise through the ‘hood. We circled North Boulder Park, visited the beautiful garden and playground at Foothill Elementary, checked out the latest plans for landmarking the stone cottage on 11th., and reminded ourselves of what a GREAT neighborhood we have. Bike riding is the best way to view our ‘hood.

If you would like to participate in a neighborhood bike ride, please comment below.

We need help putting up signs for bike rides too.

We’re  thinking a “Beer Ride” to a local brewery or a Wednesday evening Farmer’s Market ride would be fun . Anyone up for this?  Will you help with signs?
