GARDENERS BRAVE THE WEATHER!

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Check out the pictures from our GARDEN TALK.  Sunday, April 15 a group of dedicated gardeners braved a little sun, rain, and snow to visit the  newly established garden of  LeAnn and Greg Fair.  Laura Ruby, our “resident expert” gardener answered questions about  soil amendments, weed control, companion planting, fruit trees, compost, and watering.  Laura stressed experimenting, keeping a garden journal and having fun!   It was a great start to the gardening season.  We will meet again in August for a garden tour.

U.S. Cycling Monument in North Boulder Park

Monday, April 9th, 2012

April is our ‘Month of Truth’ if we are building the Monument this year in time for the USA Pro Challenge!
The structure of the Monument was no small feat of engineering to plan, and requires no ordinary skill to build. The construction team is anxious to roll up sleeves and get to work. Giving two weeks to tie up all loose ends of checks in the mail & paper trail, starting May 15 we are going to need every daylight hour til August to bring this creation into being! It took 15 years to fund and build the Valmont Bike Park; in the big picture it will not be a huge crisis if we don’t make this goal. But in light of the singular and pertinent opportunity of international pro cycling’s ‘Homecoming’ this year, we are pulling out all the stops to help this happen! We have been studying what makes people decide it’s time to donate for their ‘Place in the Park’. It is clearly the enthusiasm of friends that makes the difference. Thanks for what you are doing in this regard, and step up the action if you get in the spirit of the sprint! Your energy does wonders, no exaggeration!

SOPA and PIPA

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.

Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.

The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.

We want our Open Space managed WITHOUT GMOs!

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

WHEN: December 8th, 2011 at 6:00 P.M.
WHAT: Boulder County Commissioners Public Forum Meeting
WHERE: 1850 Industrial Circle, Longmont

Parks and Open Space will present their Cropland Policy to the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners.  Public Comment is allowed.

Join in and support other Boulder County citizens in presenting “ The Citizen’s Cropland Policy” to our Commissioners to let them know we oppose the POS (Parks and Open Space) policy which recommends the planting of GMO crops on public land.

If you haven’t sent out that email about this to friends, commit to doing it today. If you already have, send another one. You can use the text below to get the message out. Feel free to copy it and paste it into an email with a personal intro from you.

Thank you, one and all for hanging in there through this process. We are almost to the goal! As of this morning, we have just over 1000 endorsements. But we need thousands more to clearly communicate to the County Commissioners that we want our Open Space managed WITHOUT GMOs!

Go to the policy webpage http://www.bcccp.info/CitizensPolicy.html  and review and endorse the policy.

Please send the policy webpage http://www.bcccp.info/CitizensPolicy.html  to EVERYONE you know who lives in Boulder County and ask them to endorse the policy as well. This is the only “vote” we as citizens will have on this issue.

Attend the County Commissioners’ public hearing on December 8th.  Numbers count!  We need to show up in force to communicate in a clear, definitive voice!  For information on this meeting go to www.gmknow.org/key-dates.

Post these links on your Facebook page and ask fellow citizens to take a stand with you against GMOs and harmful agricultural practices and for the clean and sustainable management of public croplands.

Talk about this issue with others and let them know they can have a voice by endorsing the Citizens Policy. Help spread the word.

Pick just one of these things to do or do them all.  If each of us takes action and asks others to do the same, “We the People” can successfully define how our Open Space Agricultural acres are managed to ensure these lands are available for future generations.

Newlands/Greenlands December Gathering

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Newlands Greenland’s Monthly Gathering
December 13th @ 7pm
RSVP:   info@newlandsgreenlands.com  for location

Have you been wondering how to decrease the amount of plastic coming into your home? Packaging is a major source of disposable plastic. We will be comparing notes on how to come home from the grocery store with less packaging. Our scouts have been out to many of the grocery stores in Boulder researching the availability of bulk products. We will compare notes, share stories of success and challenges as we try to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption. Join us for our neighborhood gathering. We share stories, concerns about sustainability, local food and drinks and we strengthen our sense of community. Please join us.

GMO’s on Open Space meeting Dec. 8

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

The Commissioners are still waffling and considering approving the Parks and Open Space (POS) cropland policy which allows the continued planting of GMOs on Open Space land.

A group of concerned citizens, not satisfied with the “business as usual” cropland policy being presented by POS, have written an alternative policy referred to as “The Citizens Cropland Policy”.

In order to communicate how we want these lands to be managed, we need THOUSANDS of citizens to endorse this policy before the Commissioners’ Public Hearing on December 8th.  Our voice needs to be SO LOUD that they cannot ignore us any longer.

  • Please go to “The Citizens Cropland Policy” website at www.bcccp.info to read and endorse the policy.

  • Send the policy website to EVERYONE you know who lives in the county and ask them to endorse the policy as well.

  • Attend the Commissioners’ public hearing on December 8th.  Numbers count!  We need to show up in force and communicate in a clear, definitive voice!  (for information on this meeting go to www.gmknow.org/key-dates)

  • Post these links on your Facebook page and ask fellow citizens to take a stand with you against GMOs and harmful agricultural practices and for the clean and sustainable management of public croplands.

  • Talk about this issue with others and let them know they can have a voice by endorsing the Citizens Policy. Help spread the word.

Pick just one of these things to do or do them all!  If each of us takes action and asks others to do the same, “We the People” can successfully define how our Open Space Agricultural acres are managed to ensure these lands are available for future generations.

Thank you for participating in this direct act of democracy.

RTD Proposed Route Changes!!

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

RTD is proposing service changes – of special concern is the SKIP. Please visit the web site http://www.rtd-denver.com/proposedservicechanges-jan2012.shtml, attend the meeting, and comment by October 14 in one of the ways listed below.

Boulder meeting:

Monday October 3rd 7pm
East Boulder Senior Center
5660 Sioux Drive

Comment:

- E-mail RTD at: service.changes@rtd-denver.com.
- Look up and Cc: the RTD Director for your home district: http://www.rtd-denver.com/BoardDirectors.shtml
- Fax your comments to 303.299.2227.

Summary of proposed changes:

RTD will be holding twenty-three public hearings in the next two weeks to explain its proposals and take input on them. With its plan to cut $12 million from current services, RTD reports that it is seeking to establish a baseline, more predictable level of service that can be funded long-term. The proposed service changes outlined are intended to help RTD meet that objective.

RTD proposes to cut back rush hour service on the SKIP, 209, HX and S and to cut the 225 service on Baseline between Boulder and Lafayette in half. The 209 service between the Meadows Shopping Center and campus would be reduced to 30 minutes most of the day, with a reduction in rush hour service levels.

RTD would discontinue altogether routes 203 to the East Boulder Rec Center (diverting the 225 to do this hourly); discontinue the DD to Colorado in Denver (CU’s Medical Center and DU), the BX to Denver on Saturdays and would cut AM and PM runs on the 204, 206 and 208, also cutting out Saturday evening 205 service.

The mid-day JUMP service to and from Erie would be discontinued and the mid-day BOLT service to and from Longmont would be reduced to hourly. Both the BOLT and J routes to Longmont would be shortened, eliminating service on 21st and on Hover.

The GS to Golden would get minor adjustments; the STAMPEDE would be re-routed to better serve campus growth on east Colorado, maintaining current service levels; the T to the Tech Center would be re routed. The DASH to Louisville and Lafayette would get added AM and PM service as would the DM to Anschutz/Fitzsimons.

Our Very Own Eco Hero

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

June 14th marked the Boulder County Business Report’s Green Summit – a full day luncheon offering speakers and seminars to help us all learn how to be “greener” in our business mission and philosophy, practices and manufacturing.

The BCBR accepted nominations for its 2011 Eco-Heroes Awards.

Six individuals who live or work in Boulder or Broomfield counties were selected and honored at the Green Summit, at the Millennium Harvest House Hotel and are featured in this month’s Green Book. Nominees demonstrate “a commitment to environmental stewardship and are fostering that philosophy throughout their organization and beyond.”

Each nomination required a write-up of no more than 500 words as to why the nominee should be considered. The write-ups answered the following questions:

  • How does this individual, company or organization meet the criteria for this award?
What has the nominee done that is heroic?

This year’s Eco-Heros are:
