Steering Committee Meeting

Greenlands Steering Committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, April 7 at 2727 4th Street at 7:00 pm.  Contact kayabingham@gmail.com for more info.  We welcome new neighbors!

Mission: Greenlands is a group of Newlands Neighbors who are working toward a sustainable community through green social and educational gatherings and information sharing.

Minutes: Greenlands Meeting, 03/03/2010

Present: Vernita Cannon, Blake Cannon, Cathy Connery, Chris Connery, Tim Eaton. Diane Merker.

Website

  • Chris knows how to get website hosting for $4.00/month, but doesn’t know about anything that would be free.
  • We wonder if we could get money from Climate Smart to fund $4.00/month since we don’t have any money.
  • We also wonder if Climate Smart could have a website that was set up to accommodate websites for all of the neighborhoods, but this is something that no one really knows anything about.
  • We also wonder why we are not using .org.  Greenlands.org is already taken, but newlandsgreenlands.org is not taken.
  • Chris will send an email to Sanjay to find out the specific information he will need.
  • As per Kay, we currently have 79 registered users on our website.

Beer Tasting

  • The beer tasting event was a lot of fun with a few newcomers beyond the steering committee.
  • Some think this is okay; others believe the events should draw a larger crowd.
  • The general consensus was that the reason the Newlands Neighbors events were always so well attended was because there was a newsletter that was delivered door to door every three months.  This constantly kept event information in front of all of the neighbors all of the time.
  • If we want big turnouts, we probably need to reinstate this type of information dissemination.
  • A big thank you to Tim and Kay for organizing!

Gardening Talk

  • The majority felt that the gardening talk should be moved to April because it was scheduled to be the same evening as the Democratic caucus.
  • Last year, the talk was organized by the speakers (Steve and Laura).  We wonder if they can organize it again.
  • Vernita will send an email to Laura and Steve to check with them about a new date, to see if they will organize the evening, and to ask them to redo the flyer to reflect the new date.  She will also follow up with the church.
  • Once they send it out, we will distribute it in the same way we did with the Beer Tasting flyer.

 Future Events

  • We decided to wait until Kay is present to discuss this at length.
  • Larry Bingham is interested in organizing a family bike event around the park once the weather is nice.  We are wondering if it could be held in conjunction with the dedication of the bicycle statue.  No one knows when it will be completed.
  • Lead time is critical for the planning and organizing of the events.
  • As for movies, a successful movie event was the Whittier outdoor movie night.  It is hard to imagine doing that in Newlands without noise complaints from neighbors.
  • Tim made a phone call to find out about the date for the Mapleton Garage Sale, but no one has returned it yet.  He thinks it is in June.

Goat Trail

  • The meeting is March 9 at 6:30 at Foothill Elementary School cafeteria.
  • They seem to be looking for feedback at this point.
  • There is a survey out there which Cathy will forward to everyone.
  • Cathy says one problem with the trail is that it has quite a bit of runoff during rain storms, so is in need of some erosion control.
  • Another problem in her neighborhood is dogs off leash as they near the trail but while they are still in the neighborhood.

City of Boulder Climate Summit

  • There are two parts to this event.
  • The first meeting is on March 17 at the library which is a planning meeting to see what neighborhoods are doing to promote climate action.  Diane is planning to go to this.
  • The actual summit is being held on Saturday, April 17.  Diane and Cathy will attend.
  • Diane will bring up the idea of all the neighborhood climate action steering committees getting together during this event.  Also Cathy will talk to some of the other neighborhoods about the success of their events and what kinds of things they are doing.

Ron Rovtar

  • There is general concern about the fact that he is a real estate agent, so figure there must be something in it Vernita will send out the link to his Newlands Face Book page so the steering committee can get a better idea of what for him.
  • However, if more word about our events is getting out there, maybe it isn’t too much of a big deal.
  • Vernita will send out the link to his Newlands Face Book page so the steering committee can get an idea of what he is doing.

Action Items

  • Chris will send an email to Sanjay to find out the specific information he will need for the website hosting investigation.
  • Vernita will send an email to Laura and Steve to check with them about a new date for the gardening talk, to see if they will organize the evening, and to ask them to redo the flyer to reflect the new date.  She will also follow up with the church.
  • Once a gardening flyer has been sent out, we will distribute it in the same way we did with the Beer Tasting flyer.
  • Diane will go the planning meeting for the City of Boulder Climate Summit on March 17.  Diane and Cathy will attend the summit on Saturday, April 17.  Diane will bring up the idea of all the neighborhood climate action steering committees getting together during this event.  Also Cathy will talk to some of the other neighborhoods about the success of their events and what kinds of things they are doing.
  • Vernita will send out the link to Ron Rovtar’s Newlands Face Book page so the steering committee can get an idea of what he is doing.
  • Greenlands Steering Committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, April 7 at 2727 4th Street at 7:00 pm.
